SHW 60L Subcritical Hot Water Extraction System
A solvent-free 60L system that extracts polar, water-soluble compounds with pressurised hot water, yielding both a concentrated extract and a fragrant aromatic water.
Description
The SHW 60L Extraction System uses pressurised hot water as its only solvent. By holding water in a subcritical state – heated well above its normal boiling point but kept liquid under pressure – it dissolves and carries out the polar, water-soluble fractions of a botanical with no organic solvent at all. The 60 L vessel suits pilot batches and small production, and every run yields two products: a concentrated extract and a fragrant aromatic water.
Solvent-FreeNo ethanol, no gas – water is the only solvent.
Water-BasedPressurised hot water dissolves polar actives.
Polar ActivesIdeal for polyphenols and water-soluble compounds.
Food-SafeNothing to recover, dispose of, or declare.
Aromatic WaterEach run also yields a saleable hydrosol.
Residue-FreeNo solvent residue in the finished extract.

Hot water under pressure
Subcritical hot water extraction relies on a simple fact: when water is heated under pressure it stays liquid above 100 °C and becomes a far more effective solvent for many plant compounds. The system heats water in a sealed, pressurised vessel and circulates it through the botanical, dissolving the polar and water-soluble fractions while the pressure stops the water flashing to steam.
As the loaded water cools and the pressure is released, the heavier extract separates from the lighter aromatic water, giving two distinct products from a single run. Because the only solvent is water, there is nothing to recover or remove: the extract is residue-free and the aromatic water is ready to use as a hydrosol.

Frequently asked questions
It uses only pressurised hot water, no ethanol or gas. That makes it fully solvent-free, with nothing to recover or dispose of.
Water held under pressure stays liquid above 100 °C. In that subcritical state it dissolves many plant compounds far better than ordinary water, without becoming steam.
Two products: a concentrated botanical extract and a fragrant aromatic water (hydrosol), both usable.
Polar and water-soluble compounds such as polyphenols, along with volatile aromatics that report to the hydrosol.
380 V three-phase, around 12 kW for heating, in a 1700 × 1200 × 950 mm floor footprint at roughly 450 kg.
Yes. It is a rated pressure vessel with automatic pressure relief, over-temperature protection and hot-surface guarding, and it uses only water.
